Guidelines for Pre-recording Shows
When preparing a pre-recorded show for a specific air date, please follow these guidelines:
Before Recording
- Please plan to record a show that is exactly as long as the show lasts on KGNU’s regular schedule. Please refer to the table at the bottom of this page or exact show lengths. **Your show should be EXACTLY the time allotted. Even a few seconds here or there will not work.
- Please look at your Comrad scratchpad to see what legal IDs, underwriting, special promos, and so on, that you need to include in your show (contact your department head if you need access to the Comrad playlist system). You can access these files at the following links:
- Underwriting
- Promos-special
- Promos-ongoing
- Fundraising
- Legal/Station IDs
- PSAs
- Parking
- KGNU Calendar Spots
- If you want to read announcements from our studio monitor, please refer to this link. Please note dates for events, so that you don't announce something that is happening before your show airs.
- Make sure to end your show with music. Please also fade your track so that it ends exactly at the time it is supposed to end (please see appropriate show recording times in the table below). Fading is important for the transition, so don't forget to do this!
During Recording
- When recording your voice breaks, don't mention that the show is prerecorded. Speak as if you are doing the show live, even if you can't include "live" information.
- If you'd like to give out information for listeners to reach out, you can offer the DJ email (dj@kgnu.org) during your voice breaks. To access the DJ email, you will need Evan to grant you access with a code. Please email evan@kgnu.org to find a time to arrange for this. **Please only use the DJ email during your program.
- As always, avoid calls to action during your show (please see our non-commercial policy for details - it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the other policies on that page as well). We know we want to support small businesses and struggling artists, but we cannot tell people to buy things or support specific businesses on the air.
After Recording
- Use this guide to normalize your audio before you export your music file. (This ensures that all prerecorded shows broadcast at the same volume through our automated system. This is very important.)
- Make sure you name your file correctly. It should be "Show Name Date" (eg. Morning Sound Alternative 04-04-20). Follow the instructions at the bottom of this page for how to save your file with this correct name.
- Please save your file as a high-quality MP3. MP3 files should be saved at 320 Kbps, 44.1kHz, 16 bit if possible, and not less than 128 Kbps.
- Please send finished files to Evan using this form. Shows need to be submitted by noon the day before your program should air. If you have trouble submitting your show using this form or other information you need to share about your submission, please email Evan at evan@kgnu.org directly.
When the Show Airs
- Please plan to enter your playlist information during the show as you normally would from home. You will NOT be able to move your playlist items over to the "Saved" area on Comrad until the show actually begins. Though we expect hosts to enter the playlist items as the show plays (this ensures that it shows up correctly on our online player), if you cannot, please make sure you move the items over within 8 hours of your show ending so they get recorded for reporting purposes.
