Creating Evergreen Shows

WHAT IS “EVERGREEN” PROGRAMMING?

“Evergreen” programming is programming that can be played at any time and make sense to the listener, as it does not contain any temporal information that might be inappropriate for the time of airing. This mostly means no information about the specific date it is recorded.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR RECORDING

  • Show length should be the same as it is on the air schedule. This will depend on what show you are doing.
  • Music sets should be about 20-25 minutes with 3-5 minutes voice breaks.
  • Make sure you do a Legal ID (“KGNU Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins”) at the top of every hour of the show. This includes doing one right at the start of the show, to make sure it’s in there.
  • When you talk about the music you play, make sure to keep your language evergreen. This means not to place yourself in any specific time. So, if you’re talking about a recent release, remember that it won’t be recent 10 years from now. Instead of saying “new” or “recent” release, you can give the specific year it was released, even if it just came out yesterday. Also, don’t mention the date you are recording the file (i.e. don’t say “Today is March 13th” or anything like that).
