Basic Setup Needs
These are some basic items that you will need to produce music shows from home, including our recommendations for what you should use.
- A quality microphone
- USB microphone
- XLR Microphone with usb audio interface.
- A boom or desk stand
- Decent headphones - you won't be able to hear details with earbuds or cheap headphones. Decent headphones start around $75.
- Windscreen or pop-filter
- An acoustically quiet space. Carpeted rooms with soft surfaces, like bedrooms, work best. Dining rooms or other spaces with hard surfaces might be too reverberant. Mic technique and placement can greatly affect how much room sound is picked up.
- Computer or Laptop.
- Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Software
- Free - Audacity (recording software), or Garage Band (Mac only)
- Paid - Hindenburg (great for radio), Reaper, and many, many others.
- Mac only: SoundFlower (for recording computer sound directly into Audacity) or Audio Hijack (capturing audio from any source).
There are tons of resources on the web around basic podcast recording setups, which is basically what this is.
