KGNU Music Program Guidelines
Here is a list of guidelines that all KGNU Music DJs should reference for their music shows.
- KGNU's Legal ID is "KGNU 88.5 FM Boulder, KGNU 1390 Denver." This should be mentioned within 5 minutes of the top of the hour, every hour.
- In general, music sets should be about 20-22 minutes long with 2-4 minute voice breaks in between. If your voice breaks are shorter than 2 minutes, that's okay -- they just shouldn't be over 4-5 minutes if you can help it!
- Every voice break should contain the following:
- Mention "KGNU"
- Your name
- The name of the show you are hosting
- Back-announcing your playlist
- Other things you can include in your voice breaks:
- Items from the Fundraising and Outreach slide (studio screen)
- Current weather report (these should be brief and factual with information from a real weather website -- links available on the studio computer browser).
- Make sure you get your weather reports from a trusted source -- an easy way to do this is to use the links provided on the studio browser in the bookmark section.
- Provide information that is relevant and useful to your listeners:
- What is the current temperature?
- How will that change by the evening?
- What are the highs for the upcoming days?
- What weather can we expect during the weekend?
- Give precise information -- instead of “it’s going to be nice weather” you should say “we’re looking at a high of 70 degrees and sunny on Saturday, which means it’s going to be nice.”
- KGNU Music - this is the part of kgnu.org that includes all music show archives, DJ show pages, interview/studio session features with artists, and more.
- When you are live in the studio, make sure you are always checking your meters. Your volume level should remain consistent throughout your show, from voice breaks, to music tracks, to wav cart items. The only way to maintain a consistent volume is to monitor your levels on the board meters. They should not go into the red, but should stick within the top 3/4 of the dial.
- Every KGNU music show should incorporate new music. All shows should aim for 60-70% new music, but at least half is good too. New music counts as anything that has come out within the past 6-12 months, or even single from upcoming releases that aren't out yet.
