Station Identification – Required Legal IDs Update
Station identification announcements must be made:
- At the beginning and end of the day if the station does not broadcast 24 hours per day [Section 73.1201(a)(1)] or when the station returns to the air after being off the air for any reason.
- Hourly, as close to the “top of the hour” as feasible, at a natural break in program offerings [Section 73.1201(a)(2)]
Nothing else should be used as a Station ID unless instructed to do so by the Station Manager:
Legal ID: To be read/played at the “top of the hour” every hour.

Legal Translator ID:
Translator stations must make an ID announcement three times a day: (1) between 7:55 a.m. and 8:05 a.m., (2) between 12:55 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., and (3) between 4:55 p.m. and 5:05 p.m.
Legal Translator Station ID:
“KGNU-FM 88.5 Boulder, KGNU 1390 Denver with Translators:
K229AC Nederland
K254CH Fort Collins,
and K256CT Denver, Colorado.”

Any Station Identification offered at the bottom of the hour, in addition to our mandatory legal station IDs, should read as follows:
“KGNU-FM 88.5 Boulder, KGNU 1390 AM Denver, 99.1 FM in Central Denver, 98.7 FM in Fort Collins, 93.7 FM in Nederland, online at KGNU.ORG, on mobile devices with the KGNU APP, and on Smart Speakers by saying “Play KGNU”.
There are recorded Legal IDs, Translator IDs, and Long Version IDs in the WAV CART. Please use these recordings in order to stay compliant and avoid costly errors.
